Dr. Maya Angelou – born Marguerite Annie Johnson – was a Pulitzer Prize-winning American poet, memoirist, historian and civil rights activist, who worked alongside Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X and Nelson Mandela. She published seven autobiographies – including the widely influential I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings – three books of essays, several books of poetry, and is credited with a list of plays, movies, and television shows spanning over 50 years. She received dozens of awards and more than 50 honorary degrees, and in 2010 she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama. She passionately defended the rights of women, young people and the ignored, and her influence and impact continues to be felt today.
